Why I wrote Defense Against the Enemy's Devices

I wrote it for my own children, before they left homeschool for public school.

I wrote this book for my own children. They were leaving homeschool for public school, and I wanted them to walk through those doors ready: knowing who they are, knowing their King, and prepared for the enemy's devices in our modern culture, some of which they would meet there for the first time. I wanted them to hear about those things from me first, in a safe, Christian way, so they wouldn't be blindsided. The enemy has no qualms about lying to children, so we must be doubly vigilant and prepared.

So I wrote them lessons. Then I saw what every parent learns sooner or later: kids remember stories far better than points. The lessons became a story.

A boy named Tommy wakes in an ancient forest just south of heaven and finds the Playground, a training ground built long ago among the giant trees. There an old saint named Clarence and the King Himself teach a small class of children from around the world.

The book has 24 lessons, each followed by discussion questions and an activity, so a parent, youth pastor or co-op leader can teach it as a course. Or a kid can just read it.

Paul wrote that we are "not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11, NKJV). My prayer is that the kids who read this book won't be either.

The paperback comes out November 11. You can read two full lessons free right now: Lesson 2, The State of the World You Inhabit, and Lesson 4, The Armor of God.
